How to Ensure a Clean and Safe Burn
Wick Management
Trim wicks to about 1/8" to 1/4" before each lighting for clean burns. Tools specifically designed to trim wicks are the best option. Scissors or wire cutters may not reach down into a deep vessel.
If wicks are too long, they will produce smoke and soot. Smoking wicks are a sign that the wick is getting too long and it is time to snuff it out. Snuffing wicks out by dipping them into the hot wax (instead of blowing them out) prevents the release of soot from the wicks.
To prevent smoking or carbon built up, do not burn your candle for longer than 3 hours at a time.
Memory Burn
A "memory burn" should always be the first burn your candle experiences. A memory burn is a complete pool of melted wax that encompasses the entire top of your candle and can be up to one half inch in depth. The memory burn establishes a guarantee that every time the candle is lit, it will retain the memory of a full melt pool. This will reduce the built up of excess wax along the sides of the container, leaving them clean.
The memory burn can take up to 2 hours depending on the wick and wax combination.
Cement Candle Vessels
Handmade cement vessels are very durable and sturdy. They are sealed with a sealant on the inside and outside. They can be washed with water but do not soak them for long periods of time in water. They can be heavy and therefore can do some damage if dropped on furniture, flooring or your toe. Care should also be taken when placing them on surfaces as the bottom of the vessels, even though they have been sanded smooth, can scratch delicate surfaces.
